清贫的女学生彩子因生活所迫与供职于高校的医学副教授泷川亮吉（小泽荣太郎 饰）结婚，然两人性格年龄皆有较大差距，婚后生活并不和谐。泷川的学生幸田（川口浩 饰）适时走入他们的生活，这让彩子既感欣慰，有承受更大的痛苦。
夏日某天，泷川同妻子、幸田去北穗高泷谷攀岩。泷川失足滑落，三人性命危在旦夕，彩子最终割断绳子，致使泷川坠崖身亡。事后彩子被捕，法庭上双方围绕彩子是否蓄意谋杀而展开激烈的辩论，作为当事人的彩子和幸田，也不得不去面对内心的真实感受……。Charlie talks wealthy farmer's daughter Tillie into eloping with him (and taking her father's money).
