本片改编自推理小说家知念实希人的同名小说，背景设定在被铁栅栏封闭的原精神科医院，讲述在监狱里发生了监禁64名身份不明的住院患者和职员的事件，被牵连的速水(坂口饰)在医院内接连遇到不可思议的事情，并试图逃出的故事。。解放初期，湘西匪患严重，国民党残党败部与当地土匪勾结，为害乡里，当地民众怨声载道。人民解放军剿匪小分队队长、人送外号“东北虎”的刘玉堂，带领剿匪小分队深入大山，和匪首田大榜、钻山豹、独眼聋以及国民党女特务四丫头等反动势力展开一连串殊死搏斗。剿匪小分队在付出巨大的牺牲之后，终于将匪患根绝。。Based on author Steve Erickson's 2007 novel and directed by James Franco (The Disaster Artist, The Sound and the Fury).
