古老的封建时代，北方游牧民族始终是威胁中原政权的最大隐患。出身军籍的女子花木兰（凌波 饰）和父母家人生活在某个平凡的小镇，蛮夷势力频频南下，令百姓的生活饱受其扰。朝廷为对抗外来势力而四方征兵，巾帼不让须眉的花木兰不愿抱病在床的父亲上阵打仗，于是百般说服父母女扮男装代父从军。凭借一身过硬的武艺，花木兰屡立战功，逐渐升为了将军。在此期间，她还结识了另一位英雄李广（金汉 饰）。李广只当金兰之好，殊不知木兰已芳心暗许。残酷的战争没有尽头，在连年的征战中，木兰和李广的情谊逐渐加深……
本片根据中国民间传说改编。。Former police officer and luckless private investigator Simon Brenner has become an emergency medical technician, having been fired from the police force because he slept with his boss's wife.
